The Southern Illinois Center for a Sustainable Future
protects and enhances
the environment through teaching, research, service, and action.
SICSF
fosters a community that sustains ecological systems and educates
for
environmental awareness, global thinking, and local action. We
seek to make
environmentally sound practices the norm for the City of Carbondale,
SIUC,
and the surrounding communities.
Our commitment is to:
- Educate the public about waste reduction, efficient energy
alternatives,
natural resource conservation, and sustainable living and working
styles;
- Incorporate environmental concerns as a significant priority
in all
decision making;
- Seek alternative goods, materials, technologies, and practices
to minimize
negative impacts on the environment;
- Conserve natural resources and restore environmental quality;
- Study the social and economic impacts of the City's and SIUC's
policies;
and
- Foster a participatory process in developing environmentally
sustainable
policies.
We fully recognize that planning for sustainability will be an
evolving
